Review By Nancy Walman
Ristorante Domenico, a bustling jewel adorning Murray Hill’s Bedford Hotel, has been turning out classic regional specialties of Italy for over 20 years. Ristorante Domenico’s private dining rooms can accommodate up to 150 people.
And if you are tired of pretentious pseudo-Tuscan eateries that are all hype, Domenico is just your glass of Chianti. Speaking od wine, there is an intelligent 2 page list, starting at $28, with loads of choices under $35. We chose Antinori’s ever-dependable Santa Christina and found it perfect with such delicious pastas as a traditional linguini in white clam sauce, with the bivalves mercifully removed from the shell and chopped. A pasta special, translating loosely to “cushions” arrived as a cannelloni-like crepe, filled with ground veal and mushrooms and sauced with cream and a touch of tomato, then gratinéed. It was light as a feather and worthy of being a signature pasta.
The Tuscan Meatloaf, made entirely of seasoned veal and redolent of a wild mushroom sauce was distinguished, perhaps the best Meatloaf we’ve ever encountered in a restaurant. There are daily seafood specials as well. They are impeccably fresh and can be simply grilled or cooked in any manner the customer chooses. We went for a traditional Francesca and it fit the red snapper like a net. Vegetables are excellent as are the martinis. Try the Italian Cheesecake and biscotti with a beautiful cappuccino and relax. The friendly service staff never rushes you and if you are but two, you are given a generous table. How about that in a New York restaurant!
The decor at Domenico features colorful tile inlays in the wainscotting, walls adorned with black and white photos of Italian cities, a lively bar scene with banquettes and a lovely fish themed fresco on the wall. The main dining room features roomy tables with double white cloths, belying the informality of the restaurant, waiters are formally dressed.
