J Cuvée 20 Brut NV

The non-vintage J Cuvée 20 Brut gracefully opens up with crisp lemon peel, honeysuckle and delicate yeast aromas. Upon entry, these notes are followed by a mix of Fuji apple, grapefruit and a sweet hint of angel food cake. The acidity adds just enough liveliness and the citrus zest leads to a lingering, warm pear and lush finish. This wine pairs beautifully with a Kumamoto oyster topped with Tsar Nicoulai Caviar in a J Cuvée 20 mignonette.

The vineyards

Celebrating twenty years of winemaking excellence, J Cuvée 20 proudly displays an exceptional, stylish assemblage from the finest cool-climate vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley.

Processing

All grapes at J are hand-harvested into small quarter-ton bins and placed as whole clusters, without destemming, into our special Coquard press for a gentle pressing cycle. Grape juice from the various vineyard lots is fermented and kept separately until blending decisions are made in mid-November. The cuvée (blend) was assembled and cold stabilized to remove excess tartrates and then bottled in the spring. The cuvée included 25% oak cask aged non-vintage wines that were carefully selected for this blend.

Aging

After the secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle, the wines aged for more than three years in our cool cellar. The wines were carefully riddled to remove the yeast sediment responsible for the aging character. Following disgorging, a dosage liqueur of reserve wine and pure cane sugar was added to balance the wine. An additional six months of aging on the cork before release ensured a perfect balance of flavors.

Tasting Notes

The non-vintage J Cuvée 20 Brut gracefully opens up with crisp lemon peel, honeysuckle and delicate yeast aromas. Upon entry, these notes are followed by a mix of Fuji apple, grapefruit and a sweet hint of angel food cake. The mid-palate is interlaced with toast, caramel and almond flavors. The acidity adds just enough liveliness and the citrus zest leads to a lingering, warm pear and lush finish. This wine pairs beautifully with a Kumamoto oyster topped with Tsar Nicoulai Caviar in a J Cuvée 20 mignonette.

ROBIN POPE SAFARIS WILL OPEN EXCLUSIVE LUXURY LODGE IN VIRGIN FOREST OF SOUTHERN MALAWI

africa

MAJETE, Malawi (11/2010)  Robin Pope Safaris, the classic safari company known for its specialized and walking safaris, will open a luxury lodge called Mkulumadzi in the Majete Wildlife Reserve of Southern Malawi next July 15.

Set on a lush riverbank within a virgin forest, Mkulumadzi will comprise eight spacious chalets, each with private viewing decks offering dramatic and unimpeded views over the confluence of two major rivers, the Mkulumadzi and the Shire. Interiors are elegant and uncluttered.  Contemporary comforts such as an environmentally-friendly cooling system and luxurious bathrooms are blended with rustic Leadwood balustrades, a natural pole pergola and a facade that opens up to reveal the breathtaking view. Each chalet’s vegetated ‘green roof’ not only ensures extra camouflage, but has a natural cooling effect on the building. The main lodge will be an open-fronted space maximizing the beautiful river views and taking advantage of some cool shade on the forested banks. Activities range from swimming in the pool and dining under the stars, to river cruises, game drives and walking safaris.

The vision for Mkulumadzi is for visitors to be as active or as idle as their inclinations.  They can track rhino in the bush, hike to the peak of Majete Hill, take a cultural tour of local villages or simply lounge on the shaded riverbank listening to the grunt of hippos wallowing in the water.

Mkulumadzi is owned and managed by Robin Pope Safaris, which was founded in 1986, and which has earned a reputation as Africa’s leading safari company.  Standards of accommodation, hospitality, guiding and catering are second to none. Because of their prior success in operating lodges in Zambia and Malawi and their record of investing back into local communities, Robin Pope Safaris were awarded an exclusive private concession within Majete Wildlife Reserve to build Mkulumadzi.
