Discover new wine in The Garden of France

Select Wine Journeys has announced its 2009 program of wine tours in the historic Touraine region of France’s Loire Valley. The Loire Valley is often referred to as “The Garden of France” for its diverse and world-class vineyards, abundance of fresh food and generous markets, as well as its gentle landscape of meandering rivers, rolling vine-covered slopes and open skies. The setting is a visual delight, and a brief visit will confirm why it was the favoured home of many royals through the centuries.

Four Tour Themes

A variety of week-long tours will be offered April through October 2009 focusing on four themes: Walking & Wine in the Loire Valley, History & Wine in the Loire Valley, Discover New Wine in the Loire Valley, and Regional Cuisine & Wine of the Loire Valley. As always, each journey is restricted to a maximum of eight people to ensure an authentic, intimate experience for all participants.

2009 Highlight: Regional Cuisine & Wine of the Loire Valley

“Following the very favourable response to last year’s addition of a Regional Cuisine & Wine Week, we had absolutely no hesitation at all in deciding to include this week in 2009’s schedule,” says Dave Kasper, principal of Select Wine Journeys. “Select Wine Journeys has always highlighted exceptional cuisine, but the Regional Cuisine Week goes way beyond anything usual and should have gourmet foodies in seventh heaven!”

Two tour highlights for participants include visits to the cheese-making areas of Selles-sur-Cher and St.Maure-de-Touraine to experience the areas’ delectable goat cheese first-hand, and a visit with Eduard Clement, local foie gras maker in Ballan-Mire.

The other three popular themes (Walking & Wine, History & Wine, and Discover New Wine) remain the same as in 2008. See the website for details (www.selectwinejourneys.com).

Each seven-day/six-night tour week includes accommodation at a luxurious manoir and dining in exceptional local restaurants in the towns and villages of Touraine. Guests will visit local AOC wineries, many of which do not have regular visitation, explore local markets and enjoy gourmet picnic lunches or dine in the vineyards themselves or at a local establishment.

Unique, one-of-a-kind authentic wine tours
Select Wine Journeys’ principal Dave Kasper is a bilingual Canadian with extensive personal and business wine relationships in the Loire Valley. His significant interest and knowledge has enabled him, along with his wife Margaret Genge, to develop unique wine tours designed both for the discriminating wine enthusiast and the new-to-wine adventurer.

Fall 2008 SWJ Newsletter is now available
“I’ve heard 2008 referred to already as the ‘little miracle’ and not far off the amazing 2005 vintage, as the weather turned warm at just the right time in September,” notes Kasper. Among other activities, SWJ’s guests this past October had the opportunity to help harvest Chenin Blanc in Vouvray. Read more about it in our fall newsletter.
