Restaurant Week Dining
January 19-23 and 25-30: Winter’s Hottest Weeks to Dine

Diners in the know look forward to the designated weeks each year that they can get into some of New York City’s hottest restaurants for a fraction of the price [lunch $24.07- dinner $35.00]. The following restaurants are offering their creative cuisine for lunch and/or dinner during Winter Restaurant Week 2009.

Lunch and Dinner

Anthos [36 W. 52nd St., 212-582-6900], Michael Psilakis and Donatella Arpaia’s Michelin-starred Greek restaurant, will be open for lunch and dinner during restaurant week and on Saturday in addition. Chef Psilakis will offer dishes such as his signature Raw Meze of Fluke with whipped feta, smoked chili & scallion oil, Roasted Arctic Char with orange puree, hazelnut, gigante bean & mint, and Pumpkin Karidopita with Cranberry spoon fruit & smoked cinnamon parfait.

Atria [13-15 W. 54th St., 212-262-4600], Midtown’s new modern European restaurant, will be open for lunch and dinner during restaurant week. Chef Martin Brock will offer dishes including Cured Sea Trout with lotus root chips, sesame seeds and curry remoulade; Braised Flatiron Steak with riebele, Brussels sprouts and cabernet sauvignon jus and Caramel Apples with cider-walnut cake and granny smith sorbet.

Mesa Grill [102 Fifth Avenue, 212-807-7400], Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay’s Southwestern-inspired restaurant in Gramercy, will be offering traditional, bold-flavored dishes for lunch and dinner during restaurant week. Flay will offer dishes such as Prince Edward Island Mussels in red chile pesto broth, Cornmeal Crusted Chile Relleno filled with roasted eggplant + manchego cheese with sweet red pepper sauce + balsamic vinegar, and Chocolate Flan with spicy orange syrup and milk chocolate cinnamon wafer.

 

Mia Dona [206 East 58th St., 212-750-8170], Rising Star Chef Michael Psilakis and Donatella Arpaia’s homey Italian restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner during restaurant week and on Saturday in addition. Chef Psilakis will offer dishes such as Orecchiette with sausage, cannellini beans, broccoli rabe & roasted garlic broth, Grilled Branzino with potato, Moroccan olives & pan jus and Maple Panna Cotta with honey crisp apple compote and anise pizzelle.

Dinner Only

Apiary [60 3rd Ave., 212-254-0888], the Ligne Roset-designed seasonal American restaurant that has become an East Village destination will be open for dinner only during restaurant week. Menu items from new executive chef Scott Bryan include Roasted Beets with bucheron gratin & upland pepper cress, Atlantic Skate with smoked bacon razor clam chowder & tarragon and Roasted Organic Chicken with mascarpone polenta, wild mushrooms & madiera jus.

Pranna [79 Madison Ave, 212-696-5700], the new Southeast Asian restaurant in the Flatiron district, will have a restaurant week menu for both lunch and dinner. Chef Chai Trivedi will be offering a different menu each week, so diners will have a chance to experience a wide selection from his menu, with menu items including the Chef’s Selection of Satays, served with a quartet of signature dipping sauces, Cumin Crusted Hanger Steak with spiced sweet potato fries and Coconut Rice Pudding with Thai Chili Gelee served with a mango lassi.

Lunch Only

Gotham Bar and Grill [12 East 12th St., 212-620-4020], Legendary Chef Alfred Portale’s classic and elegant New York mainstay, will be open for lunch during restaurant week. Chef Portale and Chef de Cuisine Adam Longworth will offer dishes including a Braised Cauliflower Salad with golden raisins, pine nuts and goat cheese; and Roasted Haddock with a potato purée parsnips and leeks.

Lunch and Sunday Dinners

Convivio [45 Tudor City Place, 212-599-5045], Acclaimed Chef Michael White’s three-star southern Italian restaurant in charming Tudor City will be offering a restaurant week menu for lunch and for dinner on Sundays. White will offer dishes including Salsiccia di Maiale, grilled housemade pork sausage with braised green lentils and vin cotto; Sgombro, grilled mackerel with spinach, yukon gold potatoes and mustard-caper salmoriglio and Tartaletta, a Sicilian pistachio tart with acacia honey gelato. Michelin-starred Alto, Chef White’s other restaurant, will also be offering a restaurant-week style menu for lunch during those two weeks, 212.308.1099.
