Curtis is at the forefront of a new generation of jazz singers. With one of the most distinctive voices in music, Curtis pushes the boundaries of conventional jazz performance and expands the repertory by creating modern jazz standards. Throughout his career, the young singer-songwriter-saxophonist has been celebrated for a wide variety of impressive accomplishments-from his early pop chart success with several self-penned top-ten singles and albums and an appearance on the soundtrack of the hugely popular film The Bodyguard (one of the biggest selling albums of all time) to Downbeat Magazine naming him as one of jazz’s “Rising Young Stars” and the London Times selecting his recording, “You Inspire Me”, as the No. 1 jazz album of 2003.
Curtis has toured with pop artists Elton John, Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt while also sharing the bill with such jazz greats as Oak Room alum Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock and Nancy Wilson. His fifth Concord Records CD, “Real Emotional,” features songs by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Emmylou Harris, Randy Newman and Hoagy Carmichael, the breadth of which reflects Curtis’ intention to “make an album of great songs.”
The Oak Room’s fall season kicks off September 9th with a two-week return engagement by Jack Jones, followed by Karen Akers singing Cole Porter, the inimitable Paula West and Andrea Marcovicci in “Skylark: A Centenary Celebration of Johnny Mercer.” Andrea was the featured artist at this spring’s official Mercer Centenary Celebration in Savannah.
