Those looking for a musical holiday interlude can look toward West 52nd Street, where Gallagher’s Steak House will present “Holiday Jazz” featuring teenage musician Rhys Tivey and his band on Thursday night, December 23, a special Christmas Eve performance on Friday, December 24, and a Christmas Night encore on Saturday, December 25, with all engagements beginning 9:00 p.m.
So, whether you’re an empty-nester seeking a quiet Christmas Eve, or not an observer of the religious holiday, Gallagher’s, located at 228 West 52nd Street, provides a nice musical alternative for New York City residents or Manhattan-bound visitors. For reservations call 212-245-5336. Please mention JAZZ to be seated accordingly. Pre-performance reservations will be taken for 8 and 8:30 p.m., so that diners can place their orders prior to the start of the entertainment, while later seatings through 11:30 p.m. will also be accepted. There is a two-drink minimum required for those not dining.
Gallagher’s has a special jazz menu which features light evening fare (perfect if you don’t want to overindulge on the holidays), which is available from 9:00 pm to midnight, and includes: 4 oz. Smoked Salmon with Capers, Red Onions & Chopped Egg ($11); Chilled Medley of seafood for one – Two Bluepoint Oysters, Two Littleneck Clams, Two Jumbo Shrimp and Lump Crabmeat ($23); Caesar Salad with Chicken Garlic Toasts, Grana Padana Cheese($16); Cobb Salad Mixed Greens with Chicken, avocado, Roquefort Cheese, Bacon, Tomato and egg ($16); The Westie Club – Grilled Chicken, Bacon, Brie Cheese, Lettuce, Tarragon Mayonnaise on Sour Dough Bread with Gallagher’s Home Made chips ($14); 8 oz. Chopped Steak served with Gallagher’s Potato ($16); 8 oz. Sliced Beefsteak served with Gallagher’s Potato($18); and Gallagher’s Potato Chips ($3).
On the heels of summer performances at the renowned Teatro Del Sale in Florence, Italy, and in Istanbul with the Turkish-fusion band, “Native Project,” young musician Tivey began his second go-around of live jazz performances at Gallagher’s in September.
Tivey, 19, a native of Greenville, N.Y., is a graduate of the Empire State Youth Orchestra, through which he performed at Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, and toured in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Last fall, Tivey, who has also studied music at New York University, led a quartet in performances at Gallagher’s three nights per week.
Gallagher’s owner Marlene Brody hopes to “continue to introduce the next generation of jazz musicians” to New Yorkers, while enhancing the dining experience at the Theater District institution. Mrs. Brody, who is also the owner of Gallagher’s Stud located in upstate Ghent, New York, has long been a supporter of the Empire State Youth Orchestra.
