Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon has
established itself as one of Australia’s favourite premium red
wines. Since its first vintage in 1976, Koonunga Hill’s reputation
has been built upon its affordable price, its approachability in its
youth, with the potential to develop if carefully cellared.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is very much a reflection
of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy. Sourced from
premium vineyards across South Australia, the wine is known for
its full-flavoured style with excellent Shiraz and Cabernet fruit,
firm yet well-rounded structure and balanced oak.
Made as a traditional ‘Australian blend’, the Shiraz component
provides fleshy fruit flavour while Cabernet provides a frame of
fine grained tannins.
VINEYARD REGION Sourced from premium districts across South
Australia with signifcant parcels from
Padthaway, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully,
Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale and
VINTAGE CONDITIONS The 2008 vintage was warm to hot, with a prolonged
heatwave in mid-March. However, grapes
picked before the elevated temperatures were
delivered to the winery in excellent condition,
resulting in good varietal definition and balanced

COLOUR Crimson red.
NOSE Rich Christmas cake and summer pudding
aromas are obvious on the nose with more subtle
cinnamon / spicy oak notes adding complexity on
PALATE Deeper, darker fruits are more obvious on the
palate with plums, blueberry and dark cherries.
Tannins and fruit are well balanced with Shiraz
providing a fleshy mouthfeel and Cabernet
delivering length and structure, with varietal,
chalky tannins. Dark chocolate notes linger on the
finish in typical Koonunga Hill style.
Thomas Hyland Riesling
The Thomas Hyland range honours the pioneering spirit of
Thomas Hyland, son-in-law of Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold,
whose stewardship of the company from the late 1800s until 1914
saw the development of what, in his lifetime, became Australia’s
most famous name in wine.
The Penfolds Thomas Hyland Riesling has been labelled under
the Adelaide appellation, named after South Australia’s capital
city. The Adelaide area encompasses the city’s surrounding
winegrowing regions. Fruit for the Thomas Hyland Adelaide
Riesling is sourced predominantly from the cool climate and high
altitudes of Adelaide Hills, which produces a delicate and mineral
Three months maturation on yeast lees, a process typical of French
and German Rieslings, gives the wine greater fruit concentration
and an unctuous mouth feel, while maintaining the natural acidity
of the Adelaide Hills fruit.
VINEYARD REGION Adelaide, South Australia, including a large
portion from Adelaide Hills.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS Drought conditions continued in 2008 which
pushed vintage forward, beginning in mid to late
February. Spring was frost free followed by an
unseasonally cool February, allowing optimum
ripening conditions for maximum flavour
development with balanced acidity. However,
Adelaide struggled through one of the longest
heat waves in South Australian history, with
temperatures staying above 35 degrees Celcius
for two weeks. Fortunately the high altitude and
cool climate of the Adelaide Hills wasn’t hit by
the heat and Riesling fruit picked before the heat
spike arrived at the winery in excellent condition.

COLOUR Pale straw with lime hues.
NOSE Lifted florals of jasmine and fragrant lemon
blossom mix with kaffir lime leaf notes. A very
delicate, pretty and aromatic nose!
PALATE Delightful sweet fruit and florals continue on the

delivers a finish that is very clean and pure. Three

given a very textural, flavoursome and fleshy
wine which will continue to develop for 3 to 5

The official launch of the partnership will be celebrated this week at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The campaign marks the first time (RED)™ has partnered with an Australian brand, or a wine company, to create (PRODUCT) RED items.

“The idea that consumers can purchase Penfolds wines for enjoyment and combine their appreciation of wine and the purchase of our product, into a means of truly making a difference feels personal and impactful” said Francesca Schuler, US Chief Marketing Officer for Penfolds. “(RED) has done such amazing work in the last four years in their fight to eliminate AIDS in Africa, but there are still 33 million people in the world battling the disease, and there’s more to be done. We’re pleased to help in such a noble effort.”
Since 2006, $160 million has been generated through (RED) partnerships and events impacting 5 million people with testing, counseling and education.
“(RED) was created to harness the collective power of consumers to help eliminate AIDS in Africa, and we are pleased to have Penfolds join our family of brands.” said Susan Smith Ellis, CEO of (RED). “Penfolds, an iconic Australian brand, brings a new consumer to the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa, and we are thrilled to have their support. Palm Springs was the perfect venue to launch this partnership as Penfolds is the Official Wine Sponsor of the world renowned Palm Springs International Film Festival, held January 6-17, 2011. The film festival provided (RED) the opportunity to showcase their recently released documentary titled The Lazarus Effect. This 30-minute film, directed by Lance Bangs and executive produced by Spike Jonze, follows the story of HIV positive people in Zambia who undergo remarkable transformations thanks to access to antiretroviral medications. The festival will screen The Lazarus Effect free of charge throughout the day on January 7th, 2011. Check http://www.psfilmfest.org for screening times.
(PENFOLDS) RED products, Koonunga Hill labeled wines and Thomas Hyland labeled wines, are available in stores and restaurants across the United States. Penfolds has been producing an impressive array of wines since 1844 and arguably led the development of Australian fine wine into the modern era. The introduction of Penfolds Grange in 1951 forever changed the landscape of Australian fine wine. Since then a series of stand-out wines, both white and red, have been released under the Penfolds masthead. The 1990s was a period of intense winemaking trials. The barrage of media attention was extraordinary, illustrating Australia’s national interest in the Penfolds brand. In 2002 veteran oenologist Peter Gago became Chief Winemaker and since that time Penfolds has reached into every major wine market in the world. Penfolds wines are now widely celebrated for their diversity and quality across many price-points. The strength of Penfolds is that the wine comes first. Penfolds’ range of table wines is utterly Australian, evoking a generosity of spirit and the beauty of the Australian landscape. For more information visit http://www.penfoldsred.com
