J Vineyards Sets The Standard For California’s Finest Sparkling Wines.


While no one can deny the fact that only France truly claims the right to call sparkling wines, grown in the Champagne district Champagne, sparklers around the world can be a viable alternative and in some cases, compete with their French cousins.

Such is the case of the following two from J Vineyards and Winery. Truth be told, the 2003 Late Disgorged Vintage Brut deserves mention with the finest Sparkling Wines California makes. Subtle, elegant, attention grabbing and gorgeous, it is worth its $90 price tag and would be a jewel in the crown of any New Years celebration.

The 2005 is not to be neglected. It too is a superb example is this vineyard’s class act at about half the cost.

2003 J Vintage Brut, LD
The vineyards

The 2003 Russian River Valley growing season was a bit of a rollercoaster. Warm periods turned to weeks of cool fog, and a damp April gave way to a warm May. The late spring bloom pushed the harvest into September, which was a few weeks later than normal. Overall there was a favorable yield of grapes, proving once again that the Russian River Valley is exceptional terroir for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.


All of the grapes were hand-harvested into small quarter-ton bins and placed as whole clusters, without de-stemming, into our special Coquard press for a gentle pressing. The juice was fermented and kept separately until the final blending decision, which took place in November. The cuvée (blend) was assembled the next month, cold stabilized to remove excess tartrates, and then bottled in July of 2004.


After the secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle, the wine was aged on tiragefor seven years in our cellars. In early 2012, the wine was carefully riddled to remove the yeast sediment. Following disgorging, a dosage of oak-aged reserve wine was added to balance acidity. An additional five months of aging on the cork was added before release.

Tasting Notes

The 2003 J Late Disgorged Vintage Brut exhibits an enticing array of aromas, including toasted almond, citrus, caramel, and baked bread. A sophisticated mélange of pear and lime notes follow savory lemon and delicate cinnamon flavors. This wine is perfect for a Sunday brunch that might include strawberries with Meyer lemon curd and Cow Girl Creamery Red Hawk triple-cream cheese lightly spread over toasted cracked wheat bread.

The vineyards

The 2005 Russian River Valley growing season was cooler than average, though July was a bit warmer. The cool weather delayed the sparkling wine harvest to mid-August, and a spike in temperatures gently pushed the grapes to their proper balance of pH and acidity.


All of the grapes were hand-harvested into small quarter-ton bins and placed as whole clusters, without de-stemming, into our special Coquard press for a gentle pressing. I love the fine, persistent bubbles in this Vintage Brut. The 2005 vintage features luscious aromas of ripe citrus, pear, and honeysuckle. A noticeable yeasty brioche and butterscotch aroma lures you in for the first sip. Slight toasted almond characters add to the layers in the mouth with pear, taffy apple, and citrus flavors. An excellent balance of toast and rich fruit flavors is the hallmark of this vintage brut. It is the perfect apéritif or first-course accompaniment to a potato leek purée drizzled over curly endive with a dash of truffled caviar.

2012 Nouveau Rosé of Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

This 2012 Nouveau (nuvo), a Rosé of Pinot Noir, is produced from hand-selected Pinot Noir grapes. We harvested the grapes from our lovely Russian River Valley vineyards, with only 240 cases of this very special wine being produced. Pinot Noir grapes were gently pressed during the winemaking process, with the free-run juice now being the hallmark of this Nouveau. Harvested in September of 2012, this Rosé was released on the first Monday of December 2012, marking our inaugural tradition… And, hopefully yours too, for any of your celebrations ahead.

Tasting Notes

The 2012 Nouveau is very light bodied, and has refreshing aromas and flavors of juicy strawberries and delicious plums. A soft Rosé of Pinot Noir, this wine is intended to be enjoyed as a young, uncomplicated beverage, with great everyday appeal.

The décor includes striking sculptured chandeliers, comfortable seating in booths, banquettes and tables, and soaring pillars, extending to high ceilings.Stephen Hanson and BR Guest Hospitality can always be counted on for restaurant-theater, superb service and a first class act. Food is never an afterthought and Strip House Midtown’s interpretation of a NY Steak House adds Fine Dining to the equation, without the stuffiness that often accompanies it.

Corporate Executive Chef John Schenk, an eight-year Strip House veteran is spearheading culinary operations and Michael Vignola, most recently Executive Chef of Strip House 12th Street, brings his culinary talent to the new location as Executive Chef. The food is, in a word, perfection.

The Signature Steak

We loved the warm and professional reception at the door and the silky service, as executed by general manager Eric Hammer. A horseshoe booth on the more intimate mezzanine is an ideal spot for four to enjoy some of Manhattan’s most serious cocktails. Expert martinis and Manhattan’s with house infused cherries, served in lovely glassware are accompanied by warm bread from Tom Cat and Eli’s. Wine list is a joy. Beautifully selected and fairly priced, it is strong on American choices with bows to the old and new worlds. Our penchant for Spanish wines was rewarded with a selection by Mr. Hammer  of a Valdeorras Avanthia, 2009 that developed beautifully after 15 minutes and displayed a Merlot-like softness with lovely tannins. It worked beautifully with all the food, including lobster. The are also 17 choices by the glass (starting at $11) with Cliquot priced at $19 and a nice choice of Reserves from the Cruvinet in 3 and 6 ounce portions, ranging from $15 to $68.

An Amuse Bouche followed. It was a light potato-based soup with an herbal infusion and totally delicious. Next we suggest some of the most sparklingly, fresh seafood imaginable..Go for the SEAFOOD PLATEAU (HALF 49 / FULL 98) consisting of  OYSTERS 3 east coast / 3 west coast /; LITTLENECKS; COLOSSAL U6 SHRIMP; LOBSTER COCKTAIL; a fabulous TUNA TARTAR and terrific SCALLOP SEVICHE.
JUMBO LUMP CRAB COCKTAIL is also exceptional.

Appetite permitting, don’t miss the incredible STRIP HOUSE ROASTED BACON with
Baby Arugula and Russian Dressing. But leave room. Entrees are standouts. A special on our visit was a bone-in FILET MIGNON. I usually prefer a more flavorful cut than filet, but the remarkable meat, execution and most-of-all the bone made it the best filet I’ve ever tasted.The accompanying Béarnaise sauce was exemplary.  Our two and 1/2 POUND GRILLED LOBSTER was also fantastic. Recommended sides include the CRISP GOOSE FAT POTATOES and BLACK TRUFFLE CREAMED SPINACH.

Not many Steak Houses excel in the dessert arena, but Strip House Midtown’s   BAKED ALASKA  of Bruléed Meringue, Pistachio & Chocolate Ice Creams is a winner and the amazing STRIP HOUSE 24 LAYER CHOCOLATE CAKE must be seen to be believed.Lovely pralines accompanied coffee and were a perfect conclusion.

We loved Strip House Midtown and give it our highest recommendation: A + on The Walman Report

Rutherford Grove Petite Sirah Excels

The  2007 vintage of Petite Sirah was made in much the same style as the previous four vintages producing a luscious, fruit forward, delicious wine from Spring Creek Vineyard, located in the St. Helena appellation.

The vineyard is on the west side of the Valley floor and benefits from copious direct sunlight during the growing season as well as cool breezes in the afternoon, a perfect situation for Petite Sirah.

The 2007 Petite Sirah exhibits the typical deep black and purple hues that, amazingly, come from only 10 days of skin contact. 10 months of oak aging contribute rich aromas and flavors of toasty vanilla that are well balanced with the characteristic plum, boysenberry and hints of roasted game. The entry is rich and concentrated, the structure and weight are big and the finish is silky and very approachable early on for this varietal.

Absolutely delicious now. Tastes like a $100 wine.
